My kids are experiencing true freedom for the first time in their lives and they love it! Despite the cold nights they keep crawling in their sleeping bags and snuggle together talking about how much they enjoyed the day. I never would have dreamed of how easy it has been for them to adapt to a life with no electricity and no video games or TV. They get up before the sun rises every morning, get dressed for the day and climb into the car so we can drive four miles to the closest bus stop and off they go to school. After getting home they quickly do their homework so they can 'explore' another part of the property or do a chore from the task list on the homestead. The only time they have complained so far has been when they forget to get their clothes for the next day or didn't get in the 'shower' before the sun went down or the wind was blowing... yes we are working on enclosing the shower so they won't have to worry. Who would have thought that my kids would voluntarily go into the tent at 8pm and want to go to sleep? These are the same children that battled with me every night when I wanted them in bed by 9:30.
Back in the city we always had to force our kids outside to play and even then we dreaded it just in case it was the day when somebody decided to drive down the road to fast, or there were used needles in the playground left by a drug-addict. We always had to be right there with our kids when they were outside because of the dangers. But here, on the homestead, it is so peaceful. The kids get to run around and do whatever they desire. There is no rules, other than to stay within eyesight of us and stick with a buddy. I am so blessed for this opportunity and thankful that despite all the setbacks with the property, designing of the house and even permitting we are still pushing for our dream. JD, who is 14, is already talking about where and how he wants to build his 'home' so when he's 18 he can live on his own. The boys have found a spot they want to be their 'fort'. Despite the fact that their are no trees out here Princess wants a tree fort among the sage brush. The joy on my children's faces and the aspirations they now have for their future in just a short 3 months has made all of this and everything to come worth it.
