Just a quick note to wish every one a Merry Christmas, and for those of you who do not celebrate happy holidays! This was a hard year for my family and those that give us gifts. With us going off grid in 6 months my family had trouble thinking of what they could give us that we can enjoy now and after we move. I can understand, afterall we had to find gifts for our children and eachother as well. We all enjoyed our gifts and while we appreciate the effort, it was just perfect because we were with our family. This year we tried to have it be a small Christmas, but with it being the last Christmas in our current home and with the next few years being lean times financially Jeremy just couldn't let it be small. The past couple years I have been trying to move down to four gifts per person. These gifts are supposed to be practical and thoughtful for the recipient. These gifts are to be something they wear, something to share, something they need, and something to read. I love the idea and actually have practiced this every year, except that they always get more than just the four gifts...
My family has always had a tradition of a Christmas eve present, the present is always a new pair of pj's for the winter season. I'm an avid reader and try to encourage my children to read every chance I get, which is why I have a large 'library' of shelves filled with books for the kids. Every Christmas and birthday, among other times randomly through the year, each child gets a new book, each child didn't just get thier one book though, they each got a complete series. They also got a few new outifts of quality clothes. I am hoping the higher quality will help them last longer, as we will be harder on our clothes than we currently are. We went a little overboard with the board games this year too, they normally get one but they got two this year. We figure without electricity they will need something to do when it is dark or too hot to play outside they will have plently of games. Now Jeremy was in charge of getting each child one gift for them to play with and enjoy; he's not good at settling for just one. The kids ended up getting several 'toys' for when we move; offroading RC cars, archery sets, and tomahawks. They also got several new games for their Nintendo DS's, which while we won't have elctricity we do have a small portable solar panel and hopefully can keep them charged. I was also gifted with a few things for our homestead; my mother bought me a large stainless stock pot, Jeremy bought the pitcher pump I was wanting for the kitchen and he also got us a manual corn/grain grinder so we can make our own flour. Despite all these gifts the best one came from Santa, as it always does. This year the kids got a very nice, quality telescope. There is nothing better than laying back and star gazing, except maybe seeing them up close. Being in the city it is hard to see the stars with all the streetlights, but when we go camping the kids always enjoy lying out at night and finding constelations or looking for satelittes. How great will it be this summer when they will be able to see the milky way by just looking up every single night! With their telescope they will be able to see the craters on the moon, our solar system's first 6 planets, the rings of saturn and even distant galaxies! We all are excited to try it out and can't wait to be able to take a drive up to our property for a weekend, OUR property I still get all giddy saying it! Merry Christmas, Happy Hanuka, Joyous Kwanza, and Happy Winter Holidays from the Meyer family and the Scablands Homestead!
