Laundry when you have no electricity or access to running water can be a bit challenging and a learning process. Well at least washing the clothes can be. Line drying is basically just throwing them up and over something, preferably a clothes line and waiting for the atmosphere to do its job. We tried washing and scrubbing by hand in a bucket and hanging them. It was extremely hard to get most of the water out of the clothes. Even then, with six people wearing clothes and playing in the dirt, we go through a lot of clothes and washing a lot of clothes by hand is tough work. It is hard on the back, on the shoulders and just over all very time consuming. I kept putting it off and then driving into town to the laundry mat to do eight or more loads of laundry, which gets expensive fast. After five full months on the homestead I finally have built a laundry station! After we received a new clothes wringer at Christmas and I took another trip to Portland this weekend and while there I picked up a decent sized laundry sink for just $5! I planned and built a laundry area that will make some of our washing needs easier and faster than it has been. Of course with it being winter still I'm not super excited to try it out every other day to do our laundry. But I gave it a quick trial run today washing our smaller clothing like socks, undergarments, and washcloths. The wringer works great, almost all the water is getting squeezed out which increases drying time. The wash board got out so much dirt, I am amazed by how much dirt is in these clothes, even when the ground is still frozen so not that much dirt is stirred up walking around. Frozen, numb fingers and an hour later I had all of our clothes clean and up on the clothes line. Yes you can line dry your clothes in the winter! It just takes a day or two to fully dry, more like freeze-dry is what we experienced.
