Wow, geez it's October already. We are living on the homestead and while not anywhere near where we had hoped to be in getting the house built we are enjoying life. It is harvest season and during my daily drives to take the kids to school and into town I am seeing field after field being dug up and semi's loaded with fresh potatoes, corn and onions. The crisp cool morning air hints that winter is soon coming. And with the significant overnight drop in temperature I am reminded that we need to hurry and finish building our small cabin and get a heating source in place. So far the family has spent the last 2 months sleeping in the tent. We have been slowly working on the cabin since July, but it never seemed a priority until now. Now that it is dropping into the 30's at night and there is frost on the window when we leave for the bus stop and 6:30am. It's hard to imagine in the middle of the day when we still seek shelter from the sun that winter is coming. But every night we are reminded of it.
Our cabin is coming along, the walls are fully enclosed and the insulation is in. All that is missing is a roof, window, door and siding. Not a big deal right!? We are hoping to have the roof up this weekend and get the cabin wrapped so we can put in the old casement window we got back in Portland from a remodel of a 70 year old house. Then we can get the siding and door on next week. Besides getting the cabin completed we still need to find a way to prevent our water tank from freezing during the winter. Install a heater in the cabin, which also means getting a propane tank delivered and filled. We were wanting to use wood but since we still have so much to do for winter we can't add chopping 4-6 cords of firewood into the mix. Besides, wood can not be our primary heat in the homestead, Grant County says so...
