One of the biggest questions that I have had recently, probably because of the holiday season, is "How do you cook without electricity?" I guess folks are so used to depending on the electrical grid that they never consider that there are numerous options out there for cooking, using an electric stove, gas stove, propane stove, there are small counter top camp stoves, wood stoves, solar ovens, BBQ's, and even camp fires. So how do we cook... Right now we are using our Coleman camp stove for the majority of our cooking. Occasionally we go outside and use our BBQ, but with the temperatures dropping that is happening less than it did over summer. I haven't found it to hard to go without an electric stove, as I have been raised to use. Essentially I am cooking our meals on two burners with propane as our fuel, instead of electricity. The hardest part right now is dealing with not having an oven and having a large family to cook for. We are utilizing our two dutch ovens regularly and I am loving my cast iron skillets, which has grown significantly since we moved out here.
Some of the things I have learned to help us... I have learned to cut up our meat before it is cooked, such as roasts etc, so that they cook faster and we conserve our fuel. But most importantly yeas of camping and cooking over a campfire has taught me to be resourceful and cook differently than when you are normally at home. We have been enjoying our meat and potatoes for sure out here! The kids certainly love the simplistic and healthy meals and both my husband and I have lost quite a few pounds since we no longer have the convenience of a store down the street for unhealthy snacks or fast-food restaurants.
